Fed Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Financial Instability

The US central bank cut interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Time for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Highlights Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The number of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though the bureau was set to publish September’s employment data in early October, it suspended its publication once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
