Tetris Couldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it remains highly personal, and inevitably spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications effectively encompass many game types, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences in the world continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the hard edge interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
